The Hyundai Inster EV is one of the latest EVs from Hyundai. It is cute, cool, and affordable, and it’s not coming to a Hyundai dealer near you if you shop in the U.S. Hyundai has seen a lot of success with the IONIQ electric vehicles, and they are jumping back in with the Inster, but if you want one, you’ll have to head to Europe, the Middle East, or Asia.
What is the Inster?
The Inster is a tiny SUV. It is truly a pint-sized EV. It’s so small that if you pull up next to a Mitsubishi Mirage, the Mirage will be longer. Its small footprint is made for urban driving and will zip around city streets like a boss.
Power comes from an electric motor and a 42.0 kWh battery, or an upgraded long-range 49.0-kWh battery. The motor generates 95 horsepower with the regular battery and 113 horsepower with the long-range battery. This small SUV will drive up to 221 miles on a full charge, and it takes just 30 minutes to bring the battery from 10 to 80 percent if you use a DC fast charger.
An EV Packed to the Brim
The Inster’s cabin has two 10.25-inch screens. One is a touchscreen that sits in the dashboard to house the infotainment system and navigation. A wireless charging station helps to form part of the center console between the two front seats, giving this small SUV an open feel. In front of the driver, the other 10.25-inch screen has all the driver information you need to stay informed on your drive.
The Inster is made to be function, which is why it has both external and internal Vehicle-to-load functionality. It has enough power to charge other devices such as camping equipment and even electric bikes.
A Versatile Cabin
Inside the Inster, you’ll find a cabin designed for versatility. It has more space that you would imagine, given its size. The tall roof gives all the passengers plenty of head room, and all the seats, including the driver’s seat can be folded flat. The second row also has a 50/50 split, so you can have a passenger back there along with some extra cargo, or fold down the entire back row to make more space for cargo.
Sustainable, Environmentally Friendly EV
Hyundai continues to make more sustainable vehicles. If you look around a Hyundai dealer, you’ll find models made with recycled materials. This goes for the new Inster, too. On the outside, it has recycled high gloss black paint. Instead of the carbon black pigment usually found in black paint, its color comes from recycled tires. Inside, many materials are made from recycled plastic bottles and materials extracted from sugarcane.
So, the new Hyundai Inster EV is a cool and cute electric vehicle, but not one you’ll find a Hyundai dealer near you in the United States. We’ll just have to wait for the next great thing to come from Hyundai.
