It’s finally happening! GMC started producing the 2024 GMC Hummer EV. The production lines started up on January 30, which means customers who preordered one can head to their GMC dealership and get it sometime in March. So, why is this news so exciting? Take a look.
It All Starts with the Edition 1
The first model to come off the production line will be Edition 1. This version of the Hummer EV will have a wheelbase that sits just over 126 inches, so it’s maneuverable when you take it into tight spaces, but it will also have impressive off-road chops and the tech features to go with it. Some of the tech lucky owners will get include a new Power Station generator that drivers can use to draw up to 3 kilowatts of power. This means the Hummer can be a source of power when out on the trails, and even serve as a back up generator.
Power and Performance
The Edition 1 Hummer EV will have three electric motors, one for the front axle and two for the rear. These will generate 830 horsepower and according to GMC they will get 11.500 pound-feet of torque. This power will send the Hummer from zero to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds if you use the Watts to Freedom mode that taps into the maximum torque for a few seconds. The actual maximum torque is more in the 1,000 to 1,100 pound-feet range if you take out the Watts to Freedom mode.
Off-Road Goodies
We saw some of the off-road capabilities the Hummer has with the pickup truck version, and these will carry over to the SUV. The one most worth mentioning is the Four-Wheel Steer with CrabWalk. This mode moves the Hummer in a diagonal direction by moving the rear wheels to the same angle as the front wheels. It will offer massive 35-inch Goodyear tires, rock sliders, and underbody skid plates.
The SUV version of the Hummer is nine inches shorter than the pickup truck, so you can fit it into smaller spaces, and it will have an adjustable suspension that lifts it up an extra six inches if you need to make your way over large rocks.
Techy Features for On and Off the Road
One of the first things you’ll see in the Hummer SUV EV is the 13.4-inch touchscreen front and center in the dash, but there’s also a 12.3-inch display that sits in front of the driver. The large screens come in handy when they display the view from the UltraVision underbody cameras, so you can see what’s underneath the SUV. The new trail mapping system will work with the updated myGMC app and help drivers plan and navigate their off-road adventures.
The big news everyone is talking about at GMC dealerships is the SUV version of the Hummer EV is in production. These first Edition 1 models already have their buyers, so get ready for the next round if you want one too.
