Your local Buick dealer is about to go through some changes. Yes, that includes some new electric vehicles and updates to your favorite models, but something even more noticeable is coming. Your local Buick dealer is soon to sport a brand new logo.
The Current Logo
You’re probably familiar with Buick’s current logo. As one of America’s most recognized luxury brands, the Buick badge is part of everyday life. At the moment, Buick uses a Tri-Shield logo. This Scottish Military Emblem can be traced back to Buick’s founder, David Dunbar Buick. He started the company in 1903. In 1937, GM’s styling researcher learned about the company’s origins and decided to pay homage to its founder.
The logo started as a single shield. In 1959, the single shield became three shields. Each shield was meant to represent one of the brand’s models: LaSabre, Invicta, and Electra. The three shields are still part of the logo today, even though it moved towards more of a chrome coloring versus the brighter red, white, and blue hues from before.
A New Look?
General Motors recently filed a trademark for a redesigned version of the Tri-Shield logo. Instead of arranging the three shields diagonally (the lowest on the left and the highest on the right), the new design is going to arrange the three shields horizontally. The ring around the three shields is absent, and the logo appears to be monochromatic.
If you look closely, you’ll also see that the diagonal line that went through each shield is being replaced by a curved line. It appears that these curved lines are following suit with other updated logos from brands like BMW and Nissan.
What Does It Mean?
Neither Buick nor General Motors have confirmed that the new logo will take over or provide insight into its meaning, but there’s plenty of speculation. Of course, not everyone is thrilled about the potential new look. Some suggest that the line of shields resembles fangs or claws, and more than one reference to Marvel’s Wolverine has made its way around social media.
Many people are pointing to Buick’s recent application to trademark the name “Electra” as a clue. Most auto enthusiasts believe that the Electra will be Buick’s jump into the electric vehicle game. With advanced vehicles coming to a Buick dealer near you, it makes sense that this automaker might try to update its image to fit modern designs.
It’s hard to say if Buick is just playing around with logo options are if it is planning some kind of big reveal with the Electra hits the road. Until we know for sure, keep an eye on your favorite Buick dealer to learn more.
