The BMW M5 has been a consistent and impressive sedan for many years. This model is the hottest version of the 5 Series, giving us an amazing car to drive.
When you want a little more from a BMW than what you find in the regular model, you can always go for the M version. The BMW M Division is well-known for providing us with extra horsepower and fun for serious driving performance. The 2025 model has something different to offer compared to previous versions of the M5.
What’s different about this luxury car?
BMW went a new route with the 2025 model year. The M5 might be the high-performance version of the 5 Series, which it has always been, but this year it’s going in a different direction. This new model will be powered exclusively by a plug-in hybrid powertrain. This setup is comprised of a strong V8 engine and an electric motor to add more power to the mix. Some might consider this to be a controversial setup for the car, but it delivers excellent performance numbers, making it one of the most impressive versions of the M5 to ever hit the road.
A hot wagon is part of the plan
Many luxury sedans are turned into wagons, but not all of them. The BMW M5 will be offered as a wagon version called the M5 Touring, which is actually coming to the United States. Sometimes automakers leave these performance-oriented wagons in the European market and won’t bring them to the US, but BMW is ready to test the waters with the M5. This will give owners excellent power, high-end luxury features, and the added cargo room that comes with a wagon build, making it a car that should be a lot of fun to drive.
One trim, but lots of options
BMW will offer this new 2025 performance sedan in one single trim level, but you’ll see several options and packages that can be added. This is pretty normal for a high-end luxury car. The new M5 can be had with:
- Carbon-ceramic brakes ($8,500)
- M Drive Professional Package ($900)
- M Driver’s Package ($2,500)
- Executive Package ($1,850)
The Executive Package adds ventilated front seats, rear-seat sunshades, a park-assist system, and heated rear seats to improve the overall comfort of this impressive new M5.
What does the new BMW powertrain include?
The 2025 BMW M5 has a new PHEV powertrain under the hood. This system combines a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine with an electric motor. This setup is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission, making it easy to send power where you need it. The power output reaches 717 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque. This is good enough for the M5 to reach 60 mph in only 3.0 seconds. When equipped with the M Driver’s Package, the top speed is increased from 155 mph to 190 mph. If you want to drive the M5 using only electricity, it has a range of 25 miles to handle some of your driving needs.
An excellent cabin
The BMW 5 Series is much roomier and more elegant than smaller BMW sedans. This sedan sits in the midsize class, making it roomy and enjoyable for up to five passengers. The new M5 shares much of its cabin qualities and features with the regular 5 Series, which means the performance model is comfortable and enjoyable for your time on any road.
The M5’s interior features items that you want in a performance sedan, including an M-specific flat-bottom steering wheel with customizable M buttons and a red center hash mark. You’ll also see large shift paddle and sportier seats in this performance car. The lighting and screen animations are unique to this version, enabling a performance experience from behind the wheel.
You’ll also find some of the regular cabin items, such as the five-seat layout, iDrive control knob, a panoramic sunroof, and a Bowers & Wilkins audio system. If you choose the carbon-fiber roof, you won’t have the sunroof.
Tech for your ride
The 2025 BMW M5 doesn’t limit its tech advancements to the engine bay; the dashboard features a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 14.9-inch central infotainment touchscreen. These screens allow you to configure them to your liking, ensuring you have the information you want in front of you.
Are you looking forward to the new BMW M5? This new PHEV should be an exciting and impressive high-performance sedan that brings power, elegance, and acceleration to your driving experience.
