The new Toyota Supra is here and it’s quite a bit different from the model that left the market back in 1993.
This car is one that we’ve waited for and the name has been one of the most iconic in the automotive world for a long time. With the Supra coming back to give us a sports car we love from Toyota, it’s time to take a look at how the new model compares to the old one.
Exterior Differences in the Supra
If you looked at the new Supra next to an old one and you had no badges on them, you might not guess they are wearing the same name. The newest model of this car is visually more dramatic from the MK4 model that was part of the lore of the original models of the Toyota sports car. The newer version brings much of its inspiration from the FT-1 concept and not from the classic car that had the same name.
The front of the new version has an aggressively pointed nose, and an extra grille slat directly underneath to give you the look that makes you think of the FT-1. In the rear, the new model has a subtle lip spoiler instead of the large wing that was part of the original model of this car. The new model also has sharp, LED taillights and a centrally mounted lower brake light which is another departure item from the old Supra.
The Changes Make Their Way Inside this Toyota
Unlike the interior of the MK4 model, the new Toyota Supra has a cabin that’s pretty sparse and simple. The old model had gauges everywhere and dials that gave you different settings with knobs you had to turn. The new model has a center screen and simple gauges to make sure you can easily figure out what you need to when it’s time for a drive.
Another difference between the two models of the Supra can be found in the steering wheel. The old model had a four-spoke model that had no controls built into it. The new version offers a three-spoke build that gives you the necessary controls for everyday driving on the road. This is a big change in what the Supra has to offer.
The Engines Offer Similarities for the Supra
One area the new Supra is similar to the old Supra is in the engine bay. The new model uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine from BMW to give you 335 horsepower and 365 lb.-ft.of torque. This car can reach 155 mph but could probably do more. Currently, it’s limited by the electronic devices that have been added to keep it from going faster.
The old version of the Supra also uses a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine, but it was naturally aspirated and not turbocharged. This gave the car 220 horsepower and 210 lb.-ft. of torque. The 2JZ engine arrived later to turn up this power to 320 horsepower and 315 lb.-ft. of torque. The top speed wasn’t limited on this model and it could reach 180 mph with the more powerful engine under the hood.
