While the Porsche Boxster name isn’t new on the market, it’s been around for twenty years already; this particular model is brand new and begins the fourth generation of the Boxster as the 718 model which means it’s a bit different. This car is different than what we’ve come to know from Porsche from the engine standpoint. This new model will use one of two different four-cylinder engines which makes for a completely different type of Boxster than you’ve ever seen on the market and may make you feel as if Porsche is starting to move down the market.
Does this new Boxster mean Porsche is looking to build a cheap car? Not at all, the 718 setup is something from many years ago and gives you the benefit of an exciting pair of powertrains to enjoy. When you see the name Porsche on a vehicle you expect a perfectly balanced sports car with excellent power and that’s exactly what you’ll get. The base engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged flat four-cylinder engine that produces 300 horsepower and 280 lb.-ft. of torque. This powertrain will actually give you 21 city/28 hwy mpg with the manual transmission and 22 city/29 hwy mpg when the automatic is installed.
Moving up the engine line is a 2.5-liter turbocharged flat four-cylinder model that makes 350 horsepower and 309 lb.-ft. of torque while bringing in 20 city/26 hwy mpg with the manual and 21 city/28 hwy mpg for the automatic. Both engines for the 718 Boxster are mid mounted and low with the flat design to give you amazing balance in the car. With a car so light and the powertrain we enjoy from Porsche every bit of the power is immediate and light to the touch to give you an amazing ride.
While we know this isn’t supposed to just be a cheap Porsche, the 718 Boxster is one of the most affordable models Porsche offers. The base model starts out at a little over $57,000 while the S model will ask for at least $69,000. Of course adding any or all of the Porsche a la carte items can quickly raise the price up a great deal on this car, but it’s a Porsche and one that will give you the dynamic drive and perfect balance you want to enjoy.
The drive of this car is exciting and amazing. You’ll be searching for the nearest track in no time to make sure you can have this car out on the blacktop running the fastest laps possible. The car can be set to either Sport or Sport+ and give you an amazingly aggressive ride that is quick off the line and able to blow past most other sports cars. Imagine a four-cylinder engine that can actually reach sixty mph in only four seconds, that’s what you have here with the 718 Boxster with the larger engine.
If you never thought a four-cylinder car could win races, you need to understand where the 718 came from, which is from the 1950s and 1960s when this engine won some major events around the world, giving this car some serious roots for you to look back and admire where this setup came from.
The standard package of the new 718 Boxster comes in with a power operated roof, front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, leather upholstery, a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a six speaker audio system, an 11-gig storage hard drive and USB and Bluetooth connectivity. The Boxster S adds the more powerful engine, larger wheels and a top speed of 177 mph for you to enjoy.
Moving up the Porsche lineup can offer you a dizzying array of choices. There are different choices for the interior colors, power seats that offer either 14 or 18 way adjustments, carbon ceramic brakes, torque vectoring technology, a Sport Exhaust System, a Bose sound system, a navigation system, climate controlled seats, a heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, the Sport Chrono Package that adds the Sport+ mode, a center mounted stopwatch, and launch control.
Are you ready to embrace the new Porsche 718 Boxster? This is a car that’s made to drive and give you a ton of fun from a lightweight build that advanced the possibilities of four-cylinder engine performance. Let this car be your new excitement on the road and you’ll have as much fun as you’ve ever imagined you could in a great sports car.
